The vulnerability (CVE-2023-40477) in WinRAR arises due to improper validation of file paths within crafted archive files. Attackers exploit this flaw by embedding malicious files with manipulated paths, allowing arbitrary code execution when extracted. WinRAR fails to sanitize these paths, leading to traversal outside the intended directory. This enables overwriting system files or dropping executables in sensitive locations. The issue stems from insufficient checks during archive processing, making it possible to bypass security restrictions. Exploitation occurs when a user opens a malicious RAR file, triggering the payload.
