How the CVE Works
The vulnerability (CVE-2025-2013) in Ashlar-Vellum Cobalt arises due to improper handling of CO file parsing, leading to a use-after-free condition. Attackers can craft a malicious CO file that triggers improper memory management when processed by the software. When the application fails to validate object existence before performing operations, it dereferences a freed memory pointer, allowing arbitrary code execution in the context of the current process. Exploitation requires user interaction, such as opening a malicious file or visiting a compromised webpage. The flaw was reported under ZDI-CAN-25186 and carries a critical CVSS 4.0 severity rating due to its potential for remote code execution.
