How the CVE Works
CVE-2025-48001 exploits a Time-of-Check Time-of-Use (TOCTOU) race condition in Windows BitLocker. An attacker with physical access can manipulate the system during the brief window between when BitLocker verifies the boot integrity (Time-of-Check) and when it enforces encryption (Time-of-Use). By interrupting the process or altering boot components mid-execution, the attacker can bypass BitLocker’s encryption, gaining unauthorized access to encrypted data. This vulnerability requires physical interaction but poses a critical risk due to the high-value data protected by BitLocker.
