How the CVE Works
CVE-2025-47996 exploits an integer underflow vulnerability in the Windows MBT Transport driver. When processing specific IOCTL requests, the driver fails to properly validate a user-supplied integer value. This leads to a wrap-around condition, where a large value decremented below zero results in an unintended high positive integer. Attackers can abuse this flaw to trigger a buffer overflow or memory corruption, ultimately gaining elevated privileges on the system. The vulnerability requires local access but allows unauthorized code execution in kernel mode.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Windows
Version: 10/11, Server 2019/2022
Vulnerability: Integer Underflow → EoP
Severity: Critical
Date: 07/15/2025
Prediction: Patch by 08/2025
What Undercode Say
Check driver version: driverquery | findstr "MBT Transport" Debugging (WinDbg): !analyze -v dt nt!_IO_STACK_LOCATION
How Exploit
1. Craft malicious IOCTL request with oversized input.
2. Trigger integer underflow via controlled decrement.
3. Overwrite kernel memory for privilege escalation.
Protection from this CVE
- Apply Microsoft patch (TBD).
- Restrict local user privileges.
- Enable kernel-mode DEP.
Impact
- Local privilege escalation to SYSTEM.
- Kernel memory corruption.
- Bypass security boundaries.
