private-ip, Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF), CVE-2025-XXXXX (High)

Listen to this Post

How the CVE Works

The vulnerability in the `private-ip` package arises due to insufficient validation of user-supplied IP addresses or hostnames. The package fails to restrict multicast IP ranges (224.0.0.0/4), allowing attackers to bypass internal IP checks. When a malicious actor provides a specially crafted multicast address, the package incorrectly treats it as a valid private IP, enabling SSRF attacks. This can lead to unauthorized internal network requests, data exposure, or internal service abuse. The exploit leverages the package’s incomplete IP range validation logic, making it possible to interact with restricted multicast services.
