How CVE-2026-61017 Works
CVE-2026-61017 is a vulnerability in the Oracle WebCenter Sites product, which is a component of Oracle Fusion Middleware. The flaw resides within the WebCenter Sites component itself and affects two specific versions: 12.2.1.4.0 and 14.1.2.0.0.
The vulnerability is rooted in an Improper Access Control weakness, classified under CWE-284. This means the software does not properly restrict or enforce permissions for certain resources or functionalities. An attacker can exploit this by sending specially crafted HTTP requests to the WebCenter Sites application.
The attack vector is network-based, requires low privileges, and does not need user interaction. This makes the flaw easily exploitable. By leveraging the improper access controls, a low-privileged attacker can gain unauthorized access to sensitive functions. Successful exploitation can lead to a complete takeover of the Oracle WebCenter Sites instance.
This results in a total compromise of the system’s confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 8.8, which is considered “HIGH” severity. The attack complexity is low, and the scope is unchanged, meaning the impact is contained within the vulnerable component but is still severe.
Given the high score, the ease of exploitation, and the potential for a full system takeover, this vulnerability poses a significant risk to organizations running the affected versions of Oracle WebCenter Sites. Administrators are strongly advised to apply the available security patches without delay to mitigate this risk.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Oracle Fusion Middleware
Version: 12.2.1.4.0, 14.1.2.0.0
Vulnerability: Improper Access Control
Severity: HIGH (8.8)
Date: August 18, 2026
Prediction: August 2026 CPU
What Undercode Say:
Check current WebCenter Sites version $ORACLE_HOME/OPatch/opatch lsinventory | grep -i "WebCenter Sites" Search for the specific CVE in the Oracle CPU advisory curl -s https://www.oracle.com/security-alerts/cspuaug2026.html | grep -i "CVE-2026-61017"
Analytics: This CVE was published on August 18, 2026, and the NVD entry was last modified on August 21, 2026. It is one of the 943 vulnerabilities fixed in Oracle’s August 2026 Critical Security Patch Update. The flaw is easily exploitable over the network with low privileges, making it a high-priority target for attackers. With a CVSS score of 8.8, it poses a significant risk to the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of affected systems.
Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)
This is a conceptual example of how an attacker might attempt to exploit the improper access control vulnerability:
import requests
Target Oracle WebCenter Sites instance
target_url = "https://target-webcenter.example.com"
Low-privileged credentials (attacker already has access)
session = requests.Session()
session.auth = ('low_priv_user', 'password')
Crafted request to access a restricted administrative endpoint
malicious_payload = {
"action": "admin_override",
"param": "grant_all"
}
Send the request
response = session.post(f"{target_url}/restricted/admin/endpoint", data=malicious_payload)
if response.status_code == 200:
print("[+] Potential privilege escalation successful!")
else:
print("[-] Exploit failed.")
Protection:
- Apply the Official Patch: The most effective protection is to download and apply the security patch from Oracle’s August 2026 Critical Security Patch Update (CPU).
- Network Segmentation: Restrict network access to the Oracle WebCenter Sites server to only authorized users and systems.
- Least Privilege Principle: Ensure that all user accounts, especially those with low privileges, have only the minimum necessary permissions.
Impact:
- Confidentiality: An attacker can gain unauthorized access to sensitive data stored within WebCenter Sites.
- Integrity: The attacker can modify or corrupt data within the application.
- Availability: The attacker can disrupt the service, potentially leading to a denial of service.
- Complete Takeover: Successful exploitation can result in a total compromise of the Oracle WebCenter Sites system.
