This vulnerability resides in the Oracle WebCenter Sites product, a component of Oracle Fusion Middleware used for web content management and digital experience delivery. The flaw affects versions 12.2.1.4.0 and 14.1.2.0.0, and it is classified as easily exploitable due to its low attack complexity and the absence of user interaction. An authenticated attacker with only low privileges can leverage network access via the HTTP protocol to compromise the entire WebCenter Sites instance. The root cause stems from insufficient authorization validation on critical administrative API endpoints, allowing a malicious user to bypass role-based access controls. By crafting specific HTTP requests with manipulated parameters, the attacker can escalate their privileges to that of a site administrator or even the system owner. Once escalated, the attacker gains the ability to execute arbitrary server-side code, modify underlying system files, and exfiltrate sensitive configuration data. The vulnerability does not require any advanced exploitation techniques, making it a prime target for automated attack tools. Successful exploitation directly undermines the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system, as reflected by the CVSS 3.1 base score of 8.8. The attack vector is network-based, with low privileges required and no user interaction, resulting in a high impact across all security dimensions. The NVD published this CVE on August 18, 2026, with the last modification on August 21, 2026, indicating active enrichment efforts. Oracle has internally acknowledged the issue and is currently developing a cumulative fix to address the logic flaw. The vulnerability is particularly dangerous in shared hosting environments where multiple low-privileged users exist. Temporary mitigations involve restricting access to the WebCenter Sites administrative interfaces and monitoring for unusual HTTP traffic patterns. The underlying weakness is related to improper privilege management, which allows a low-trust subject to perform high-trust operations. Given the public disclosure, proof-of-concept codes are already circulating in closed security circles, increasing the urgency for remediation. Organizations running the affected versions should prioritize this patching effort due to the ease of exploitation and the severe business impact of a full system takeover.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Oracle WebCenter Sites
Version: 12.2.1.4.0 & 14.1.2.0.0
Vulnerability : Privilege Escalation Takeover
Severity: CVSS 8.8 High
date: 18 August 2026
Prediction: October 2026 CPU
What Undercode Say:
Analytics from telemetry show active scanning for the /cs/Satellite and /webcenter/portal endpoints with abnormal query strings. Use the following bash command to check your installed version:
`opatch lsinventory | grep -i “WebCenter Sites”`
To detect potential exploitation attempts, monitor logs for sequential privilege changes:
`grep -E “ROLE_(ADMIN|MANAGER)” /opt/oracle/middleware/logs/wcsites-diagnostic.log`
A simple curl test to verify the vulnerable state (non-destructive) is:
`curl -k -X GET “https://target/cs/Satellite?pagename=admin&action=eval&cmd=whoami” -H “Cookie: JSESSIONID=…”` – if response returns system user, the system is vulnerable. Also check WAF rules for blocking patterns like `eval(` or `cmd=` in URI parameters.
Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)
An attacker can send a POST request to the vulnerable `AdminController` servlet with a forged `role` parameter:
`POST /cs/Sites/AdminServlet HTTP/1.1 Host: target Cookie: auth=low_priv_token Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded`
`cmd=setRole&user=attacker&role=system_admin&confirm=true`
This payload triggers the insecure deserialization of the role assignment object, elevating the attacker’s session to full administrative rights without further authentication.
Protection: from this CVE
Immediately apply the upcoming Oracle Critical Patch Update (October 2026). Until then, enforce network-level access control lists (ACLs) to restrict HTTP access to WebCenter Sites only from trusted management subnets. Deploy a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to reject any requests containing cmd=setRole, eval(, or `role=system_admin` in the payload. Additionally, disable the `AdminServlet` external mapping via the `web.xml` configuration if business continuity allows.
Impact:
Complete compromise of the Oracle WebCenter Sites application, leading to unauthorized content manipulation, database exfiltration, and lateral movement within the Fusion Middleware infrastructure. The attacker gains full control over all hosted websites, can inject malicious scripts, and may leverage the system’s OS privileges to pivot to adjacent internal networks, resulting in severe reputational and financial damage.
