OpenBao, LDAP MFA Enforcement Bypass, CVE-2025-XXXXX (Critical)

Listen to this Post

How the CVE Works:

OpenBao’s LDAP authentication with `username_as_alias=true` fails to normalize user-supplied usernames when assigning MFA requirements. Attackers can craft specially formatted usernames (like case variations or Unicode lookalikes) that bypass alias-based MFA enforcement while maintaining valid authentication. The system treats these manipulated usernames as distinct aliases from the properly configured ones, allowing access without required MFA checks despite matching the same underlying identity.
