The CVE in OpenBao’s API-driven audit subsystem allows privileged API operators to bypass intended restrictions. Attackers can exploit a maliciously crafted log prefix to gain arbitrary filesystem and network write access under the OpenBao server’s user context. This enables unauthorized TCP connections to internal hosts and potential remote code execution if combined with custom plugins or system processes. The vulnerability stems from insufficient access controls on the `sys/audit/` endpoints, which should be restricted to prevent such abuse.
