How the CVE Works
CVE-2025-48812 is an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in Microsoft Office Excel. When a maliciously crafted Excel file is opened, the software fails to properly validate memory ranges during data parsing. This allows an attacker to read sensitive data beyond the intended buffer, potentially exposing confidential information stored in memory. The flaw occurs due to improper boundary checks when processing certain Excel spreadsheet elements, such as malformed cell structures or corrupted formula references. Exploitation requires user interaction (opening a malicious file) but can lead to local information disclosure without additional execution privileges.
