CVE-2026-96959 represents a critical resource allocation vulnerability within Microsoft .NET components, specifically impacting `System.Security.Cryptography.Xml` and System.Private.Xml. The underlying issue occurs because previous versions of these libraries failed to enforce strict input-depth and operation-count limits when handling signed XML and C14N transforms. Attackers can exploit this flaw by sending malformed or maliciously structured XML inputs that trigger unrestricted DTD processing, expansive entity expansion, and unconstrained encrypted-data candidate processing. Without proper resource throttling or input sanitization, the application consumes excessive CPU cycles and memory resources while attempting to parse and verify the cryptographic signature. This uncontrolled consumption rapidly depletes server resources, resulting in a complete Denial of Service (DoS) for dependent applications. Remediations require enforcing explicit operational caps, prohibiting DTD processing by default, and updating runtime packages to patched versions.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Microsoft .NET
Version: Affected .NET packages
Vulnerability: Unbounded resource allocation
Severity: High risk score
date: October 13 2026
Prediction: Released October 2026
What Undercode Say:
`dotnet –info`
`dotnet list package`
`dotnet add package System.Security.Cryptography.Xml`
Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)
Crafting recursive XML entity references and unconstrained DTD definitions within signed XML elements to overwhelm memory and CPU limits during parsing.
Protection:
Update .NET runtime and SDK, refresh vulnerable package references, recompile self-contained apps, and restart services.
Impact:
Remote application crash and system-wide Denial of Service via memory/CPU exhaustion.
