This security vulnerability affects Microsoft .NET projects utilizing System.Security.Cryptography.Xml and System.Private.Xml, specifically involving inefficient algorithmic complexity and unconstrained processing risks. Attackers can exploit these flaws because the affected components previously lacked stringent input-depth controls, operation-count limits, and default prohibitions on external DTD processing, allowing maliciously crafted XML payloads to exhaust server resources. When an application processes these untrusted signed XML structures or performs C14N transformations without proper bounds, it triggers excessive CPU consumption or memory exhaustion, leading directly to a denial of service. The newly implemented security fixes enforce strict input-depth and operation-count limits, prohibit DTD processing by default, properly validate entity references, bound encrypted-data candidate processing, and cap attributes and namespaces. Developers must update their affected .NET packages and runtimes immediately to mitigate potential disruption and recompile any self-contained deployments.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Microsoft .NET
Version: 8.0 – 11.0
Vulnerability : Denial of Service
Severity: High
date: 10/13/2026
Prediction: Patch released now
What Undercode Say:
To verify runtime versions and identify vulnerable configurations in your current environment, use the command-line interface to inspect installed packages.
dotnet --info dotnet list package --vulnerable
Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)
Crafting an attack payload involves supplying deeply nested element structures or recursive entity definitions inside a signed XML document to trigger algorithmic complexity bottlenecks during canonicalization or XML parsing phases.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <!DOCTYPE root [ <!ENTITY entity "value"> ]> <Root> <SignedXml xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/09/xmldsig"> <!-- Nested candidate structures causing resource exhaustion --> </SignedXml> </Root>
Protection: from this CVE
Update all affected Microsoft .NET runtimes and SDK packages to the patched versions (such as 8.0.32, 9.0.21, 10.0.13, or 11.0.0-rc.2) and restart all dependent applications or services.
Impact:
Successful exploitation results in severe denial of service conditions, leading to application crashes, resource starvation, and complete unavailability of services relying on vulnerable .NET XML and cryptography parsers.
