How the CVE Works
The vulnerability exists in the fnic driver of the Linux kernel. When Fabric Device Management Interface (FDMI) requests—specifically both the Register HBA (RHBA) and Register Port (RPA) requests—time out, the driver attempts to reuse the same network frame to send an Abort (ABTS) command for each timeout. This incorrect resource management leads to the same memory frame being freed twice upon send completion. This “double-free” is a type of use-after-free error that corrupts kernel memory, causing a system crash and kernel panic, resulting in a denial-of-service condition and potential privilege escalation.
Platform: Linux Kernel
Version: fnic driver
Vulnerability: Double-Free
Severity: Critical
date: 07/09/2025
Prediction: Patch expected by 07/23/2025
What Undercode Say:
Analytics
dmesg | grep -i "panic|fnic" cat /sys/class/scsi_host/host/fdmi_host_name git log --oneline --grep="CVE-2025-38238"
How Exploit:
An attacker can trigger this vulnerability by causing the FDMI service to become unresponsive, leading to the RHBA and RPA requests timing out. This can be achieved by flooding the storage fabric with traffic or manipulating network responses. The subsequent double-free crash is exploitable for denial-of-service. The corruption of kernel memory also presents a potential avenue for executing arbitrary code with kernel privileges.
