CVE-2025-36006 is a denial-of-service vulnerability affecting multiple versions of IBM Db2. The flaw originates from the database server’s improper release of resources after they have been used. In a normal, secure operation, Db2 should correctly manage system resources like memory or file handles, releasing them back to the system once a database operation is complete. However, due to this bug, the server fails to properly release these resources in certain scenarios. When an authenticated user sends a specific, malformed sequence of queries or commands, it triggers this flawed code path. This causes the server to consistently hold onto resources without freeing them. With each repeated malicious request, the pool of available system resources gradually depletes. Eventually, this resource exhaustion reaches a critical point where the Db2 server can no longer function correctly, leading to a complete denial of service as it becomes unresponsive or crashes, preventing legitimate users from accessing the database.
Platform: IBM Db2
Version: 10.5.0-11.1.4.7
Vulnerability: Resource Exhaustion
Severity: Medium
Date: 2025-11-07
Prediction: Patch by 2025-12-15
What Undercode Say:
db2pd -dbptnmem db2pd -db <dbname> -locks db2 "select from table(snapshot_get_dbs( -1 ))" db2stop force db2start
// Hypothetical code triggering resource leak
void vulnerable_function(DB_HANDLE handle) {
allocate_resource(handle);
// ... use resource ...
if (error_condition) {
return; // Resource not released on error path
}
release_resource(handle);
}
How Exploit:
Authenticated user sends repeated malformed requests causing memory/file handle leaks, leading to service crash.
Protection from this CVE:
Apply IBM security patch. Restrict database user privileges. Implement network segmentation. Monitor system resource usage.
Impact:
Db2 server unresponsive or crashing, causing application downtime and availability loss.
