How the CVE Works
During log replay in the Btrfs filesystem, the `read_one_inode()` function can return a NULL pointer under specific error conditions. The code in functions like `__add_inode_ref()` does not properly check for this NULL return value and proceeds to the error handling path. In this path, the code attempts to call iput(&inode->vfs_inode), which dereferences the invalid (NULL) `inode` pointer. This causes a kernel-level NULL pointer dereference, leading to a system crash and a denial-of-service condition, or potentially allowing for local privilege escalation.
DailyCVE Form
Platform: Linux Kernel
Version: Affected versions
Vulnerability: NULL Pointer Dereference
Severity: Critical
Date: 2025-07-09
Prediction: Patch expected by 2025-07-23
What Undercode Say:
Analytics
dmesg | grep "BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer" cat /proc/version uname -r
// Pseudo-code of the flaw inode = read_one_inode(...); // ... if inode == NULL, flow continues ... iput(&inode->vfs_inode); // CRASH: Dereference of NULL
How Exploit:
Local system user triggers filesystem corruption or crafted log replay, causing kernel panic (crash) or potential privilege escalation via kernel memory corruption.
Protection from this CVE
Apply kernel patch. Update to fixed kernel version.
Impact:
Kernel crash (DoS), potential local privilege escalation.
