How the CVE-2025-8850 Works
In LibreChat version 0.7.9, the API endpoint designed for disabling two-factor authentication (/api/auth/2fa/disable) lacks proper security validation. The intended flow requires a user to provide a valid, current one-time password (OTP) or a backup code to confirm their identity before 2FA is removed. However, the backend implementation of this endpoint does not actually verify the submitted OTP or backup code. An authenticated attacker can send a direct HTTP POST request to this endpoint with any arbitrary, invalid, or even empty value in the OTP field. The server will process this request and successfully disable 2FA for the account, completely bypassing the second authentication factor. This insecure design flaw allows a user to weaken their own account’s security, reducing it to single-factor authentication.
