Keras, Safe Mode Bypass, CVE-2025-XXXX (High)

Listen to this Post

The vulnerability in Keras (CVE-2025-XXXX) stems from an unsafe deserialization flaw in the `Model.load_model` method. When loading a `.keras` model archive, the function fails to properly enforce safe mode, allowing maliciously crafted files to execute arbitrary code during deserialization. Attackers can exploit this by distributing a manipulated model file that, when loaded, triggers unintended code execution under the victim’s environment. This bypass occurs due to insufficient validation of serialized payloads, enabling Python’s `pickle` module (or equivalent) to process untrusted data. The issue affects Keras versions 3.0.0 through 3.10.0, where the safe mode flag is either ignored or improperly enforced during model loading.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Keras
Version: 3.0.0-3.10.0
Vulnerability: Arbitrary code execution
Severity: High
Date: Aug 11, 2025

Prediction: Patch by Sep 2025

What Undercode Say:

import keras
model = keras.models.load_model("malicious.keras") Triggers exploit
Check Keras version:
pip show keras

How Exploit:

  • Attacker crafts a malicious `.keras` file with embedded payload.
  • Victim loads the file via load_model(), executing attacker-controlled code.

Protection from this CVE:

  • Discontinue use of `load_model` on untrusted files.
  • Upgrade to patched version post-release.
  • Use sandboxed environments for model loading.

Impact:

  • Full system compromise via code execution.
  • Data exfiltration or ransomware deployment.
