Juniper ScreenOS, Authentication Bypass, CVE-2015-7755 (Critical)

Listen to this Post

The vulnerability CVE-2015-7755 is a critical authentication bypass in Juniper ScreenOS. The flaw resided in the code handling SSH and TELNET login sessions. A specific, hardcoded password was secretly placed within the operating system, creating a hidden backdoor account. When remote attackers connected to the management interface via SSH or TELNET, they could supply this unspecified password instead of a valid user’s credentials. The authentication routine would incorrectly accept this secret password, granting the attacker full administrative privileges to the device. This bypassed all standard security checks, providing unauthorized remote root access without needing to know any legitimate user credentials. The backdoor function was intentionally inserted, allowing complete compromise of the network firewall.
