How the CVE Works
The vulnerability occurs when parsing malicious TOML input containing the `__proto__` key. The `js-toml` library improperly handles this key, allowing an attacker to pollute the global Object.prototype. This manipulation affects all objects inheriting from Object, potentially leading to authorization bypasses, DoS, or RCE if the application relies on unchecked property access. The issue stems from insufficient input validation during TOML parsing, enabling arbitrary property injection.
DailyCVE Form
Platform: js-toml
Version: <1.0.2
Vulnerability: Prototype Pollution
Severity: High
Date: 2023-XX-XX
Prediction: Patch expected by 2023-XX-XX
What Undercode Say
npm audit js-toml grep -r "<strong>proto</strong>" node_modules/js-toml
const toml = require('js-toml');
const maliciousPayload = '<strong>proto</strong> = { isAdmin: true }';
toml.parse(maliciousPayload); // Triggers pollution
How Exploit
Craft TOML with `__proto__` key to inject properties. Example:
<strong>proto</strong>.isAdmin = true
Protection from this CVE
- Upgrade to v1.0.2+
- Sanitize TOML input
- Use `Object.create(null)` for safe objects
Impact
