How the CVE Works
The vulnerability resides within the NIM (Network Installation Manager) server service (nimesis) on IBM AIX and VIOS. The service improperly validates and sanitizes user-supplied input before using it in command execution contexts. A remote, unauthenticated attacker can craft a malicious network request containing operating system commands. Due to insufficient process controls and input validation, the NIM server directly executes these commands with the privileges of the `nimesis` service, which typically runs with high system-level authority. This flaw is a recurrence of a similar issue previously patched in CVE-2024-56346, indicating a related but distinct attack vector within the same service that was not fully mitigated.
DailyCVE
Platform: IBM AIX/VIOS
Version: 7.2, 7.3, 3.1, 4.1
Vulnerability : Remote Command Injection
Severity: Critical
date: 11/13/2025
Prediction: 12/18/2025
What Undercode Say:
Check if NIM server is running lssrc -s nimesis Check installed AIX version oslevel -s List filesets related to NIM lslpp -L | grep -i nim
How Exploit:
An attacker sends a specially crafted packet to the NIM server’s listening port. The payload embeds shell metacharacters or full commands that are passed to a system shell by the vulnerable `nimesis` process, leading to unauthorized command execution.
Protection from this CVE
Apply IBM security patch. Restrict network access to the NIM server (port 1058/1059). Disable the `nimesis` service if not required.
Impact:
Full system compromise. Unauthorized remote code execution as root. Complete loss of system integrity and confidentiality.
