Apache Traffic Control, Inefficient Regular Expression Complexity, CVE-2025-XXXX (Low)

Listen to this Post

The CVE-2025-XXXX vulnerability in Apache Traffic Control stems from an inefficient regular expression (regex) within the Traffic Router component’s management interface. An attacker with access to this interface can craft and submit a malicious, complex regex pattern. When the application’s regex engine processes this pattern, it can lead to catastrophic backtracking. This occurs when the engine exhaustively attempts to match the string against the poorly designed pattern, resulting in an extreme consumption of CPU resources. The process enters a state of algorithmic complexity, causing the application to hang or become unresponsive for a significant period. This effectively creates a Denial-of-Service (DoS) condition, rendering the Traffic Router management interface unavailable to legitimate users. Since the project is retired, no official patch is planned.
