The CVE-2025-34240 vulnerability exists within the Advantech WebAccess/VPN software, specifically in versions prior to 1.1.5. The flaw is located in the `AppManagementController.appUpgradeAction()` method. This function handles requests related to application management upgrades. It improperly processes user-supplied input from datatable search parameters. An authenticated user, even with low-privileged observer rights, can interact with this endpoint. The application constructs SQL queries dynamically using these input parameters. Without proper sanitization or parameterized queries, the input is directly concatenated into SQL statements. This allows for SQL injection attacks. The attacker can craft malicious search strings containing SQL meta-characters. For example, adding a single quote (‘) to break out of the intended query structure. This enables the injection of arbitrary SQL commands. Commands like UNION SELECT can be appended to the original query. The injected SQL can target database system tables such as INFORMATION_SCHEMA. This leads to the extraction of sensitive database information. The vulnerability exploits the trust placed in authenticated session data. The backend database, likely MySQL or a similar system, executes the manipulated query. The application then returns the query results within the datatable response. This results in unauthorized disclosure of database contents. Attackers can enumerate tables, columns, and rows. Data exfiltration occurs without requiring high-level permissions. The vulnerability is a classic example of insufficient input validation in Java-based web controllers. The root cause is the lack of prepared statements or output encoding for SQL queries.
Platform: Advantech WebAccess/VPN
