How CVE-2024-27983 Works:
The Local File Inclusion vulnerability in Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS) versions 10.0 and 10.1 originates from improper input sanitization in the RestFilter servlet, which handles requests to the /h/rest endpoint in the Webmail Classic UI. This servlet uses user-supplied parameters like “service” and “method” to dispatch internal requests. However, due to insufficient validation, attackers can manipulate these parameters to perform path traversal attacks. By crafting HTTP requests with sequences such as “../”, an unauthenticated remote attacker can traverse directories and include arbitrary files from the WebRoot directory. For example, a request like “/h/rest?service=Autodiscover&method=discover&data=../../../../etc/passwd” can lead to the disclosure of sensitive system files. The WebRoot contains critical configuration files, including zimbra.properties with database credentials, which can be exposed. This vulnerability allows reading local files without authentication, leading to information disclosure. The issue is in the Java code where user input is directly used to construct file paths without proper sanitization, bypassing security controls. Attackers can exploit this to gather sensitive data, potentially facilitating further attacks like unauthorized access or privilege escalation. The vulnerability is remotely exploitable, increasing its severity. Patches involve validating and sanitizing input parameters to block path traversal attempts.
