WordPress, Unrestricted File Upload, CVE-2025-47658 (Critical)

Listen to this Post

How the Mentioned CVE Works:

The vulnerability exists within the `elex-helpdesk` WordPress plugin’s file upload functionality, specifically in the `upload_files_ajax` action. The affected code does not properly validate the file extension or MIME type of user-supplied uploads before moving them to a publicly accessible web directory. An attacker can exploit this by crafting an HTTP POST request containing a malicious file, such as a PHP web shell, with a double extension (e.g., “shell.php.png”) or by manipulating the request headers. Since the plugin’s validation logic is insufficient or can be bypassed, the file is saved on the server with its original, dangerous extension. Consequently, the attacker can directly access the uploaded file via its URL, leading to remote code execution on the underlying web server with the privileges of the web service account.
