Jira Software Data Center and Server, Path Traversal (Arbitrary Write), CVE-2025-22167 (High)

Listen to this Post

This High severity vulnerability is a path traversal flaw in Jira Software Data Center and Server that allows arbitrary file write. Introduced in versions 9.12.0, 10.3.0, and 11.0.0, it stems from improper sanitization of user-supplied input used in file path operations. Attackers can craft malicious requests containing directory traversal sequences (e.g., ‘../../../’) to escape the intended directory. When the application processes this input to write files, it fails to validate the resulting path. This enables adversaries to write arbitrary files to any location writable by the Jira JVM process. The vulnerability typically exploits endpoints that handle file uploads or configuration changes. By manipulating parameters, an attacker can overwrite critical system files, application scripts, or configuration files. This could lead to remote code execution, service disruption, or data manipulation. The CVSS score of 8.7 indicates high risk due to low attack complexity and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Affected versions up to 9.12.27, 10.3.11, and 11.0.x are vulnerable. The flaw requires authentication, but could be chained with other issues for pre-auth exploitation. Fixed versions properly normalize and validate file paths before write operations.

What Undercode Say:

Analytics

!/bin/bash

Check Jira version for vulnerability

curl -s http://jira-host/status | grep -oP ‘”version”:”\K[^”]+’

Simulate path traversal attempt

curl -X POST -H “Content-Type: application/json” -d ‘{“path”:”../../../etc/passwd”}’ http://jira-host/rest/api/2/attachment

List recent logs for exploitation signs

grep -r “path traversal” /var/atlassian/jira/logs/

How Exploit:

Attacker sends HTTP POST request with traversal sequences in ‘path’ parameter to vulnerable endpoint, bypassing restrictions to write web shell to webroot, achieving remote code execution.

Protection from this CVE

Upgrade to fixed versions: 9.12.28, 10.3.12, or 11.1.0. Restrict JVM write permissions. Implement network segmentation. Apply input validation filters.

Impact:

Arbitrary file overwrite, potential remote code execution, system compromise, data loss, service disruption.
