Wireshark, HTTP3 Dissector Crash, CVE-2025-13945 (Medium)

Listen to this Post

The CVE-2025-13945 vulnerability targets Wireshark versions 4.6.0 and 4.6.1, specifically within the HTTP/3 protocol dissector. HTTP/3 utilizes QUIC transport over UDP, and Wireshark dissectors decode packet data for user analysis. This flaw arises from inadequate error handling during packet dissection. When processing malformed HTTP/3 frames, the dissector fails to validate buffer boundaries or frame structures. This can trigger a null pointer dereference or buffer overflow when parsing crafted packets. Attackers can exploit this by injecting specially designed HTTP/3 packets into network traffic monitored by Wireshark. The dissector attempts to decode invalid frame types or truncated payloads without proper checks. This corrupts the application’s internal state, leading to a segmentation fault and abrupt termination. The crash results in denial of service, disrupting network analysis sessions. The vulnerability is confined to the Wireshark application and does not escalate privileges or compromise the host system. However, it prevents further packet inspection, impacting security monitoring and troubleshooting. The root cause lies in missing sanity checks for packet length and field values within the dissection code. Developers overlooked edge cases for anomalous HTTP/3 streams. Patches are required to add robust input validation and exception handling. This issue underscores the importance of fuzz testing for protocol parsers in network tools.
