Mattermost, Authorization Bypass, CVE-2025-12756 (medium)

Listen to this Post

How the CVE works:

Mattermost Boards feature includes comment functionality for collaboration. In affected versions, the server-side code for deleting comments does not validate user permissions correctly. An authenticated user assigned the editor role can send a DELETE request to the comment deletion API endpoint. The server processes this request without checking if the user is the original comment author or has administrative rights. This authorization bypass allows any editor to delete comments created by other users by specifying the comment ID. The vulnerability arises from missing access control checks in the comment deletion function. Attackers can exploit this by crafting HTTP requests using tools like curl or scripting languages. The flaw impacts data integrity and can disrupt team workflows. Versions 11.0.x up to 11.0.2, 10.12.x up to 10.12.1, 10.11.x up to 10.11.4, and 10.5.x up to 10.5.12 are vulnerable. Patches add permission verification before deletion.
Platform: Mattermost
Version: Multiple affected versions
Vulnerability: Unauthorized comment deletion
Severity: Medium
Date: 2025-12-01

Prediction: Patch expected 2025-12-05
