Windows RRAS Heap-Based Buffer Overflow Vulnerability, CVE-2025-49663 (Critical)

Listen to this Post

How the CVE Works

CVE-2025-49663 exploits a heap-based buffer overflow in Windows Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS). An attacker sends a specially crafted network packet to a vulnerable RRAS instance, triggering an overflow in a dynamically allocated memory buffer. This corruption allows arbitrary code execution with SYSTEM privileges due to RRAS running as a high-privileged service. The exploit bypasses standard memory protections (e.g., ASLR) by leveraging precise heap grooming techniques.

What Undercode Say

Analytics:

windbg !heap -p -a <corrupted_addr>
msfconsole > use exploit/windows/rras/cve_2025_49663

How Exploit:

  • Craft malicious packet via Scapy (IP/UDP layers).
  • Spray heap to control overflow target.
  • ROP chain to bypass DEP/ASLR.

Protection from this CVE:

  • Disable RRAS if unused.
  • Apply MS patch ASAP.
  • Enable Control Flow Guard (CFG).

Impact:

  • Remote SYSTEM compromise.
  • Network propagation.
  • Full infrastructure takeover.
