Splunk Enterprise, Cross-Site Scripting, CVE-2025-20385 (Critical)

Listen to this Post

How the CVE works:

CVE-2025-20385 is a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Splunk Enterprise and Splunk Cloud Platform. An authenticated user with the high-privilege capability `admin_all_objects` can inject malicious JavaScript code into the `href` attribute of an anchor tag within a navigation bar collection. This occurs due to insufficient input sanitization when configuring navigation elements. The malicious payload is stored in the Splunk interface and executed automatically in the browser of any user who views the navigation bar, including administrators. This allows the attacker to perform unauthorized actions, such as stealing session cookies, modifying settings, or accessing sensitive data, without victim interaction. The vulnerability requires initial admin-level access for injection but can compromise lower-privileged users, leading to potential privilege escalation or system takeover.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Splunk Enterprise Cloud
Version: Below specified versions
Vulnerability: Stored XSS
Severity: Critical
Date: December 3 2025

Prediction: Patched versions released

What Undercode Say:

Analytics:

  • Check Splunk version: `splunk show version`
    – Sample malicious payload: `javascript:alert(‘XSS’)`
    – Verify navigation bar: `curl -k https://splunk-server/navigation`
    – Inspect collections: `grep -r “href” /opt/splunk/etc/apps/`
  • Test XSS detection: `python3 xss_scanner.py`

How Exploit:
