The CVE-2025-XXXXX vulnerability is a buffer overflow within the NVMe-oF target component of SPDK (lib/nvmf). It occurs when processing an NVMe-oF command containing a crafted Logical Block Reference Tag (LBRT) field. The target code fails to perform adequate bounds checking before copying this user-supplied tag value into a fixed-size stack-based buffer. This lack of validation allows a remote, authenticated attacker to write data beyond the intended buffer’s boundary by sending a specially crafted NVMe-oF packet. The overflow can corrupt adjacent memory on the stack, potentially leading to a denial-of-service condition by crashing the SPDK application or, in a worst-case scenario, allowing for arbitrary code execution.
Platform: SPDK
Version: 25.05
Vulnerability: Buffer Overflow
Severity: Moderate
date: 2025-10-01
Prediction: 2025-10-29
What Undercode Say:
grep -r "lbrt" spdk/lib/nvmf/ objdump -d spdk/build/bin/spdk_tgt | grep -A 10 -B 10 "memcpy"
// Hypothetical code snippet showing the flaw
void process_lbrt(struct nvme_cmd cmd) {
char lbrt_buffer[bash]; // Fixed-size stack buffer
// Missing bounds check on cmd->lbrt before copy
memcpy(lbrt_buffer, cmd->lbrt, cmd->lbrt_length); // Potential overflow
}
How Exploit:
Craft oversized LBRT in NVMe-oF command packet. Send packet to target port. Overflow corrupts stack memory.
Protection from this CVE:
Apply vendor patch. Restrict NVMe-oF network access. Use control groups for isolation.
Impact:
Denial-of-Service, potential remote code execution.
