The vulnerability in Apache Pyfory stems from its unsafe deserialization process. In affected versions, when Pyfory deserializes data, it can be forced to use a pickle-fallback serializer if the data stream is specially crafted. This manipulation occurs because the deserialization logic does not securely validate the serializer type specified within the malicious payload. Consequently, when the pickle-fallback is invoked, the code executes `pickle.loads()` on the attacker-controlled data. The `pickle` module in Python is inherently unsafe as it can construct arbitrary Python objects, leading to the instantiation and execution of malicious code defined within the serialized payload. This flaw allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to achieve arbitrary code execution on the system processing the untrusted Pyfory serialized data.
Platform: Apache Pyfory
Version: 0.12.0-0.12.2
Vulnerability: Arbitrary Code Execution
Severity: Critical
date: 2025-10-01
Prediction: Patch expected 2025-10-08
What Undercode Say:
`curl -s https://api.github.com/advisories | jq ‘.[] | select(.severity==”critical”)’`
`python3 -c “import pickle; pickle.loads(open(‘malicious.pkl’, ‘rb’).read())”`
`pip list | grep -i pyfory`
How Exploit:
Craft malicious serialized data forcing the pickle-fallback serializer to be used, containing a payload that executes OS commands when deserialized.
Protection from this CVE
Upgrade to Pyfory version 0.12.3 or later. Never deserialize data from untrusted sources. Implement strict network controls and input validation.
Impact:
Full system compromise, remote code execution, and complete loss of data integrity and confidentiality.
