Rust , Memory Corruption, CVE-2021-0047 (Critical)

Listen to this Post

How the CVE Works:

The CVE-2021-0047 vulnerability in `slice-ring-buffer` stems from improper handling of unsafe Rust code, leading to double-free conditions. When safe APIs are called, internal unsafe operations mismanage memory allocations, causing the same memory block to be freed multiple times. This corrupts the heap and can lead to arbitrary code execution or crashes. The issue persists because the crate inherits flawed memory management from its predecessor, slice-deque.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Rust crate
Version: <0.3.0
Vulnerability: Double-free
Severity: Critical
Date: 2021-01-15

Prediction: No expected patch (Unmaintained)

What Undercode Say:

$ cargo audit
$ grep -r "unsafe" src/
$ valgrind --tool=memcheck ./target/debug/slice_ring_buffer_test

How Exploit:

Crafting malicious input to trigger safe API calls that invoke double-free via internal unsafe operations.

Protection from this CVE:

Avoid using `slice-ring-buffer` <0.3.0. Switch to maintained alternatives.

Impact:

Arbitrary code execution, denial of service.
