Python-socketio, Remote Code Execution, CVE-2024-27301 (Critical)

Listen to this Post

The vulnerability exploits the insecure deserialization of messages between servers in a python-socketio multi-server setup. These deployments use a message queue, like Redis, for internal communication. Messages within this queue are serialized using Python’s `pickle` module. A server receiving a message automatically deserializes it using pickle.loads(), trusting the queue’s content. An attacker with prior access to this queue can inject a maliciously crafted pickle payload. This payload uses Python’s `__reduce__` method to define a callable and its arguments, which are executed during the deserialization process. This mechanism allows the attacker to run arbitrary Python code on the server, achieving remote code execution within the application’s context and with its privileges, provided the message queue is already compromised.
Platform: Python-socketio
Version: <5.14.0
Vulnerability: RCE
