phpMyFAQ, Authentication Bypass, CVE-2024-XXXX (Critical)

Listen to this Post

The vulnerability CVE-2024-XXXX in phpMyFAQ stems from a fundamental flaw in the user registration logic where the application fails to check if an email address is already associated with an existing account before creating a new one. During the registration process, when a POST request is sent to the endpoint handling new user creation, the backend code does not perform a SQL query to verify the uniqueness of the provided email in the `faquser` table. This allows an attacker to submit the registration form multiple times with the same email address but different usernames. Each submission successfully creates a new, distinct user account. Since the system uses email as the primary identifier for critical functions like password resets, the reset mechanism becomes ambiguous. When a password reset is requested for the duplicated email, the system may reset the password for the oldest account, the newest account, or an arbitrary account, depending on the underlying database query’s `ORDER BY` clause, which is often unpredictable. This ambiguity can be exploited for a complete account takeover, especially if one of the accounts linked to the email has elevated privileges.
