How the mentioned CVE works:
In couch-auth version 0.21.2, the `src/user.ts` module between lines 700-707 handles user authentication by storing sensitive data like session tokens and passwords within standard JavaScript objects. Post-authentication, these objects retain the sensitive values in the application’s runtime memory. The library lacks a secure cleanup mechanism to explicitly overwrite or nullify these memory regions after their use. This memory residency creates a persistent window where the sensitive data can be extracted. Attackers can exploit this by analyzing the application’s heap memory through debugging tools, core dumps, or memory inspection techniques in a compromised environment. This exposure could lead to session hijacking or unauthorized account access if the memory is successfully harvested.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Node.js
Version: 0.21.2
Vulnerability : Information Disclosure
Severity: Moderate
date: 2025-11-20
Prediction: Patch 2025-12-04
What Undercode Say:
Commands to find potential memory leaks in a Node.js process strings /path/to/core_dump | grep -E "(token|password|session)" node --inspect-brk your_app.js Attach debugger to inspect memory npm audit --production
// Example of insecure storage in an object
let userCredentials = { token: 'secret-token', password: 'plaintext-pass' };
// Function remains missing, leaving data in memory
// userCredentials = null; // Proper cleanup is absent
How Exploit:
Attacker gains memory access.
Debugger inspects application heap.
Searches for credential patterns.
Extracts tokens/passwords from memory.
Uses stolen data for hijacking.
Protection from this CVE:
Update couch-auth library.
Explicitly nullify sensitive objects.
Use secure memory handling.
Avoid storing secrets unnecessarily.
Conduct security audits.
Impact:
Session hijacking possible.
Unauthorized account access.
Information disclosure risk.
Memory residue leakage.
