Palo Alto Networks, Command Injection, CVE-2024-3400 (Critical) -DC-Oct2026-3094

Listen to this Post

CVE-2024-3400 represents a critical command injection vulnerability in Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS.
It specifically targets the GlobalProtect feature configured as a portal, gateway, or both.
The vulnerability affects specific releases of PAN-OS versions 10.2, 11.0, and 11.1.
Cloud NGFW, Panorama appliances, and Prisma Access deployments remain completely unaffected.
The root cause involves improper input validation and an arbitrary file creation flaw.
Unauthenticated remote attackers can leverage this flaw over the network without valid credentials.
Exploitation typically involves sending a crafted HTTP POST request to the firewall.
Attackers can embed malicious shell commands inside specific cookie fields like SESSID.
The GlobalProtect application handles this input improperly and creates files using the tainted data.
When the system processes the resulting file paths, command execution is inadvertently triggered.
Because the affected system daemons run with highest privileges, code executes as root.
Successful exploitation grants the adversary complete administrative command over the firewall.
Attackers can disable security features, change firewall rules, or intercept internal communications.
The vulnerability requires no user interaction, making automated mass scanning highly effective.
Threat intel groups noted active exploitation campaigns shortly after public disclosure.
The National Vulnerability Database and FIRST assigned a maximum CVSS base score of 10.0.
Its Exploit Prediction Scoring System score sits at the maximum threshold percentile.
CISA added the vulnerability to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog immediately.
Security researchers dubbed early observed exploitation campaigns like Operation MidnightEclipse.
Attack payloads have been observed dropping secondary backdoors and post-exploitation scripts.
Forensic investigation often reveals unusual file creation in sensitive system directories.
Network logs display anomalous outbound connections originating from the compromised firewall device.
Administrators can check support files and logs for indicators of compromise.
Temporary mitigations previously included disabling device telemetry, though patches supersede them.
Official vendor hotfixes were rapidly developed to permanently resolve the underlying code flaw.
Immediate upgrading to patched versions remains the definitive solution for impacted networks.
Threat prevention subscriptions also provide signature-based blocking rules for network protection.
This flaw highlights the severe risks associated with perimeter edge device security.
Robust patch management and rapid response are essential to defend against such threats.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Palo Alto Networks
Version: PAN-OS 10.2 11.0
Vulnerability: OS Command Injection
Severity: Critical 10.0
date: April 12 2024

Prediction: April 14 2024

What Undercode Say:

Batch triage processing using kaidoku streamlines vulnerability management.

Run batch scans with input files:

python kaidoku.py --file scan-export.csv

Pipe vulnerability lists directly into the script:

cat cves.txt | python kaidoku.py -

Single-CVE lookups and AI-powered briefings can also be executed:

python kaidoku.py CVE-2024-3400 --ai

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

The exploit relies on arbitrary file creation via GlobalProtect session management.
An attacker transmits an HTTP request containing malicious strings in cookie values.

Example conceptual payload pattern:

POST /globalprotect/login.esp HTTP/1.1
Host: firewall.target
Cookie: SESSID=/../../bin/touch%20/tmp/pwned;

Improper handling of this file path results in system command execution as root.

Protection: from this CVE

Apply official vendor hotfixes immediately for PAN-OS versions 10.2, 11.0, and 11.1.
Enable threat prevention signatures such as Threat ID 95187 on GlobalProtect interfaces.
Verify integrity of configuration files and inspect system logs for anomalous activity.

Impact:

Complete system compromise allowing attackers to gain full root privileges.
Total loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability on perimeter firewalls.

Potential lateral movement into protected internal enterprise networks.
