Oracle Hyperion Financial Management, SQL Injection, CVE-2026-70928 (High) -DC-Aug2026-1812

Listen to this Post

CVE-2026-70928 is a critical SQL injection vulnerability affecting the Oracle Hyperion Financial Management (HFM) product, specifically within its Security component. The vulnerability resides in an unknown function of the Security module, where insufficient validation of user-supplied input allows an attacker to manipulate SQL queries executed by the application.
The flaw is classified as easily exploitable, requiring only low-privileged credentials and network access via SQL. An attacker with basic authenticated access to the HFM system can craft malicious SQL payloads that are then executed by the backend database with the application’s privileges. This injection occurs because the application fails to properly sanitize or parameterize input data before incorporating it into dynamic SQL statements.
Successful exploitation of this vulnerability can result in a complete takeover of the Oracle Hyperion Financial Management system. The attacker can execute arbitrary SQL commands, leading to unauthorized reading, modification, or deletion of sensitive financial data stored in the HFM database. Furthermore, the attacker may be able to escalate privileges, create new administrative accounts, or extract credentials that could be used for lateral movement within the enterprise network.
The vulnerability carries a CVSS 3.1 Base Score of 8.8, indicating high severity with significant impacts on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The attack vector is network-based (AV:N), with low attack complexity (AC:L) and requires low privileges (PR:L) with no user interaction (UI:N). The scope is unchanged (S:U), and all three impact metrics—confidentiality, integrity, and availability—are rated as high (C:H/I:H/A:H). This combination of factors makes the vulnerability particularly dangerous, as it can be exploited remotely by any authenticated user with minimal effort.
The affected version is Oracle Hyperion Financial Management 11.2.25.0.000. Organizations running this version are at immediate risk and should prioritize applying available patches. The vulnerability was published on August 18, 2026, and is part of Oracle’s August 2026 Critical Security Patch Update, which addressed 943 new security patches across multiple product families.

Bash commands and codes related to the blog

Check current HFM version
$ORACLE_HOME/OPatch/opatch lsinventory | grep -i "Hyperion Financial Management"
Verify if system is running vulnerable version 11.2.25.0.000
sqlplus -s system@hfmdb <<EOF
SELECT version FROM hfm_system_info WHERE version='11.2.25.0.000';
EOF
Basic SQL injection test (Educational Purposes only)
Vulnerable parameter: 'id' or similar input field
curl -X GET "https://hfm-server/hfm/security?param=1' OR '1'='1"
Check for patch availability
wget -qO- https://www.oracle.com/security-alerts/cpuaug2026.html | grep -i "CVE-2026-70928"

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

The vulnerability can be exploited by injecting malicious SQL payloads into input parameters that are passed to the backend database without proper sanitization. For example, an attacker with low-privileged access could submit a crafted request to the HFM Security component:

-- Example injection point within the Security component
SELECT FROM hfm_users WHERE username='admin' AND password='' OR '1'='1'
-- Extracting sensitive data via UNION-based injection
UNION SELECT username, password_hash FROM hfm_users WHERE '1'='1'
-- Escalating privileges by modifying database records
UPDATE hfm_roles SET role='ADMIN' WHERE username='attacker'

The attack can be initiated remotely over the network, requiring no user interaction. While no public exploit is currently available, the vulnerability is easily exploitable and poses a significant risk to affected deployments.

Protection:

  • Apply Oracle’s August 2026 Critical Security Patch Update immediately
  • Restrict network access to HFM systems to authorized users only
  • Implement input validation and parameterized queries in all application components
  • Monitor HFM logs for suspicious SQL patterns and unauthorized access attempts
  • Consider deploying Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules to detect and block SQL injection attempts
  • Conduct regular security assessments and penetration testing on HFM deployments
  • Review and enforce the principle of least privilege for all HFM users

Impact:

  • Complete takeover of Oracle Hyperion Financial Management system
  • Unauthorized access to critical financial data and sensitive business information
  • Modification or deletion of financial records and reports
  • Potential privilege escalation and creation of rogue administrative accounts
  • Lateral movement within the enterprise network using compromised credentials
  • Regulatory compliance violations and potential financial penalties
  • Reputational damage and loss of customer trust
  • Business disruption due to data corruption or system unavailability
