OpenSSL, Buffer Over-read Vulnerability, CVE-2025-XXXX (Moderate)

Listen to this Post

How the CVE Works

The vulnerability occurs in the `openssl` crate (Rust) before version 0.10.55. When an empty string is passed to X509VerifyParamRef::set_host, the function fails to properly validate input boundaries, leading to an out-of-bounds read. This allows an attacker to trigger memory access beyond the intended buffer, potentially leaking sensitive data or causing a crash. The flaw stems from insufficient input sanitization in the hostname verification logic.
