In NR modem software, improper input validation in packet processing logic allows remote attackers to cause a system crash. Specifically, when parsing incoming network packets, the modem fails to validate certain input fields, such as message headers or payload lengths. This omission enables crafted packets to trigger buffer overflows or null pointer dereferences. Attackers can send these malicious packets over the network without authentication, exploiting the vulnerability repeatedly. The crash leads to a denial of service, disrupting modem functionality and potentially affecting connected devices. The issue resides in the code handling NR protocol messages, where missing checks allow malformed data to corrupt memory or force unexpected resets. This can be exploited from any remote location, requiring no user interaction, and may render the modem unusable until manually rebooted. Continuous exploitation could sustain denial of service, impacting communication services reliant on the modem.
