MotionPhoto, Improper Access Control, CVE-2025-58482 (High)

Listen to this Post

The vulnerability resides in the MPLocalService component of MotionPhoto applications versions before 4.1.51. Improper access control mechanisms fail to enforce necessary permission checks, allowing local attackers to interact with the privileged service. The service’s entry points, such as onStartCommand or onBind, do not validate the calling application’s identity or permissions. This enables any local process, including those with minimal privileges, to bind to the service or send crafted intents. Attackers can exploit this by creating a malicious application that sends a specific intent to the MPLocalService. The service, designed to handle motion photo data, mistakenly processes requests from unverified sources. This flaw bypasses Android’s security sandbox, granting unauthorized access to privileged operations. Consequently, attackers can start the service with elevated system contexts, leading to local privilege escalation. The vulnerability stems from missing authorization code that should verify the caller’s package signature or user ID. In multi-user environments, a locally installed app can trigger this flaw without user interaction. Exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code with higher privileges, potentially accessing sensitive data or modifying system settings. The issue is critical as it undermines the principle of least privilege. Fixed in version 4.1.51 by adding proper permission validation before service activation.
Platform: MotionPhoto
Version: Prior to 4.1.51
Vulnerability: Improper Access Control
Severity: High
Date: 2025-12-01

Prediction: Patch 4.1.51

What Undercode Say:

Analytics:

bash: adb shell dumpsys activity services | grep MPLocalService

bash: pm list packages | grep motionphoto

code: Intent intent = new Intent(“com.motionphoto.START_SERVICE”);

code: if (checkCallingPermission(“android.permission.BIND_ACCESSIBILITY_SERVICE”) != PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED) { throw new SecurityException(); }

How Exploit:

Create malicious app crafting intent to bind MPLocalService. Send intent without permissions. Trigger privileged service operations. Gain elevated system access.

Protection from this CVE

Update to version 4.1.51. Implement permission checks. Restrict service binding. Validate caller signatures.

Impact:

Local privilege escalation. Unauthorized service activation. System compromise. Data confidentiality loss.
