This vulnerability exists within the SSH restricted shell interface provided by certain HPE network management services. The shell is intended to enforce strict access controls, limiting authenticated users with read-only privileges to a specific set of non-administrative commands. The flaw is an improper access control mechanism within this restricted environment. A user who has successfully authenticated with read-only credentials can, through specific manipulations or sequences of commands, escape the confines of the restricted shell. This escape bypasses the intended security boundary and provides the attacker with full, interactive access to the underlying operating system’s shell, typically with root or administrator-level privileges. The exploit leverages a logic error or insufficient validation in the shell’s command filtering or session handling, allowing the execution of arbitrary system commands.
