Microsoft NET, Denial of Service Vulnerability, CVE-2026-96236 (High) -DC-Oct2026-3175

Listen to this Post

The CVE-2026-96236 vulnerability resides within the ASP.NET Core request-localization fallback component found in modern .NET platforms. When handling incoming web traffic, the localization mechanism processes culture parameters supplied by clients. Due to inadequate validation and resource throttling on fallback parameters, malicious actors can continuously transmit unauthenticated requests containing synthetic or arbitrary culture names. These incoming strings are dynamically processed and appended directly into the runtime’s global culture cache without any upper bounds or limit checks. As the application processes a high volume of these crafted requests, the internal cache grows indefinitely, consuming all available server heap memory. This unchecked allocation forces extensive garbage collection cycles, degrades application responsiveness, and ultimately triggers a full application crash or remote denial of service condition affecting the entire service infrastructure.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Microsoft .NET
Version: 8.0 to 11.0
Vulnerability : Denial of Service
Severity: High
date: 10/13/2026

Prediction: October 13, 2026

What Undercode Say

When examining ASP.NET Core localization internals, the fallback mechanism parses culture configurations dynamically from request headers or query strings. If these inputs are not restricted against a predefined whitelist, attackers can exploit cache injection vectors to exhaust system resources. Memory leak patterns of this nature often bypass standard web application firewalls because the malicious requests mimic legitimate internationalization traffic. Developers should audit middleware configurations where dynamic culture providers are enabled without strict boundary controls.

dotnet --info
dotnet add package Microsoft.AspNetCore.App.Runtime --version 8.0.32

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability by sending a flood of HTTP requests containing unique, randomized, or malformed synthetic culture strings to an endpoint utilizing request localization.

GET / HTTP/1.1
Host: vulnerable-app.local
Accept-Language: x-synthetic-culture-999999

Repeated execution of this pattern forces the runtime to instantiate and cache thousands of distinct culture objects, rapidly exhausting available memory.

Protection:

To secure applications against CVE-2026-96236, update all affected Microsoft .NET projects to the patched runtime or SDK versions (such as 8.0.32, 9.0.21, 10.0.13, or 11.0.0-rc.2). Review project files to ensure package references point to secure releases, and restart services immediately after patching. For self-contained deployments, applications must be fully recompiled and redeployed with the updated dependencies.

Impact:

Successful exploitation of this flaw allows remote, unauthenticated attackers to cause unbounded memory consumption on target servers. This leads to severe resource exhaustion, application unresponsiveness, widespread service disruption, and denial of service for legitimate users without requiring valid credentials or user interaction.
