How the CVE Works:
CVE-2025-48806 is a use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft’s MPEG-2 Video Extension, which handles video decoding. The flaw occurs when the software fails to properly manage memory pointers during MPEG-2 stream processing. An attacker can craft a malicious MPEG-2 file that triggers improper memory deallocation, leaving a dangling pointer. When this pointer is later reused, it leads to arbitrary code execution in the context of the application, potentially allowing local privilege escalation or system compromise.
