How the CVE Works
CVE-2025-48805 is a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in Microsoft’s MPEG-2 Video Extension. The flaw occurs when processing specially crafted MPEG-2 video files, leading to improper memory allocation. An attacker can exploit this by tricking a user into opening a malicious file, causing data to overflow into adjacent heap memory. This allows arbitrary code execution in the context of the current user, potentially leading to full system compromise if combined with privilege escalation techniques. The exploit leverages improper bounds checking during video stream decoding, corrupting heap structures and hijacking control flow.
