How the CVE Works
CVE-2025-20687 is an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in MediaTek’s Bluetooth driver due to improper bounds checking. When processing maliciously crafted Bluetooth packets, the driver fails to validate input sizes, allowing an attacker to read memory beyond allocated buffers. This can lead to denial of service (DoS) or potential information disclosure. Exploitation requires local access with user privileges but no user interaction. The flaw stems from incorrect buffer handling in the driver’s packet-parsing logic, triggering a system crash or unintended data exposure.
DailyCVE Form
Platform: MediaTek Bluetooth Driver
Version: Pre-patch versions
Vulnerability: Out-of-Bounds Read
Severity: Medium
Date: 07/14/2025
Prediction: Patch expected by 08/15/2025
What Undercode Say
Check Bluetooth driver version dmesg | grep -i "bluetooth" Debug crash logs adb logcat | grep -i "kernel panic" Mitigation (disable BT if unused) rfkill block bluetooth
How Exploit
- Craft malicious Bluetooth packets to trigger OOB read.
- Use local access to execute DoS via unprivileged process.
- No public PoC available; likely low exploitability.
Protection from this CVE
- Apply MediaTek’s patch (WCNCR00418045).
- Disable Bluetooth if unused.
- Restrict local user privileges.
Impact
- Local DoS (system crash).
- Potential information leakage.
- Low attack complexity but limited scope.
